Are there places to camp for free in Canada like there are in the U.S.?

My friends and I frequently enjoy camping in the U.S. in the multitude of national forests, where you can camp for free basically anywhere (except in the designated campgrounds, which charge a small nightly fee). Pretty much anywhere in areas managed by the Bureau of Land Management are the same.

Are there similar areas in Canada? For example, does Canada have a similar national forest system in which it is free to camp pretty much where ever you want?
