Is it possible to enter Canada by car with just a New York state license?

I know that a birth certificate is recommended/one should be prepared to provide it or some other proof of citizenship if they don't have a passport, but is it absolutely necessary or is there some way to get in with only a driver's license (from NY, if that makes any difference; I had to provide proof of citizenship to get the license)?

You need proof either in the form of a birth certificate or passport to get into Canada. I tried to enter via Michigan last year but they wouldn't let me even though I had my driver's license. So, no, you can't get into Canada with just a driver's license. Thanks 911.
