Why is it considered bad luck to put a hat on a bed?

I have heard of this superstition many times and want to know what you think.

Wow, I've never hear of that. Just that it's disrespectful wearing hats indoors.
I have never heard of the new shoes on the table either.

It's funny where these superstitions get started...it's almost like people just make things up back in the day.

I bet it's because someone just didn't like it..so they say it's a superstition. Ha!

Maybe this will be of some help:

It's bad luck to put a hat on a bed. I imagine this could well be true in the case of an illicit love affair, as the guilty person scoots out the window or slips into the closet to hide, leaving his hat sitting at the foot of the bed.
