Yes, I’ve had it for years. Strangely enough, there is still no accepted scientific explanation for why some people get it. Sometimes it just feels like an electric current that makes you want to keep moving your legs all the time, other times, it can be like little electric shocks, painful needle-like prods and suchlike. From past experience, I think it could be due to high blood sugar levels, or high blood pressure, or both together. I’m a borderline Type 2 diabetic, and I’ve noticed that if I have a lot of sugar before I go to bed, it’s much worse. Same goes for several other people I know who have it. See if cutting down on the sugar works. My other theory suggests that if you have poor circulation, and high blood pressure, then somehow the nerves in your feet and lower legs can get stimulated and even damaged by this. Here’s what I found after several years of suffering from this problem, and taking all kinds of pills which did not work. It sounds weird but it works 100% of the time for me. I noticed that the sensations went away when I applied pressure with my hands to the affected area. So I took an old belt and tied it around my calf just below the knee. Tight enuff to feel it, but not too tight to cut off blood circulation. This is important. If you do this and feel your foot and leg becoming cold, undo the belt at once. I think this tourniquet device lowers the blood pressure in the lower limb, and thus alleviates the symptoms. I have two belts, and sometimes I have both legs strapped. Like I said, I feel quite proud of my invention, becoz since I started doing it, on EVERY occasion, the sensations, which used to keep me awake at night, simply went away. If you try this tourniquet idea, drop me a line if you want, and tell me how it went. The other things you can do are avoid too much sugar and heavy food before bed time, and try to get some light exercise before you turn in. Simply walking around the block will do. The fact that exercise helps, corroborates my notion that this is connected to high blood sugar levels; becoz exercise is the best way of getting those levels down. Good luck. This is a problem that is very prevalent today, although we don’t really hear much about it.
