Can dogs sense spirits or ghosts?

The other night my 6 month old toy poodle suddenly stopped playing with his toys, looked off into the kitchen, and backed up to corner himself between the wall and the couch. For a good half hour he would tilt his head, walk around in circles, and look into the kitchen. He would not go into the kitchen even if I walked in there. This dog is the type to follow me EVERYWHERE! He tried to growl, but I put a stop to that whenever he would start. It scared the **** out of me! It was like he saw something. The lights were off, the window shades were drawn, and it was just him and me. I was wondering if maybe dogs can sense paranormal things. The house isn't too old, built in 1977, and to my knowledge nobody has passed in the house. Well I hope not anyways! Thanks for any insightful answers.

I firmly believe that animals can sense things that we cannot. So the answer would be yes.

Dogs in my opinion are the best animals in sensing pharnormal activity. By your discription...I'd say it seems pretty likely that there is some kind of activity going on at your place. However like a couple people said First thing is DONT GET SHOOK UP BY THIS. Spirits are all around us..All day all night..everywhere. Sorry to inform you that the fact that your house is fairly young, In No Way going to give you a less chance of there being spirits...A HUGE MITH. Sorry for this news...But Life IS BEAUTIFUL ..Enjoy

Firstly yes they can sense something paranormal.I owned a 17th century hotel in England and my Great Dane would be transfixed sometimes at night with a corner of the bar where even people had seen something. The ghost legend was of a woman wearing a Victorian night gown who was burned alive when her dress caught fire from the candle she was carrying. The dog would behave in a very similar way to yours.Alternatively your dog might have heard something from outside in the distance which frightened him? As a 6 month old this is his first Independence Day and so he might have heard firworks in the distance which scared him.The fact that you couldn't hear the fireworks (because our ears are crap by comparison) means maybe you spooked yourself?
