 According to the featurettes on the Ghost Rider DVD, the 1950s Hamilton Slade version of Ghost Rider was inspired by the "Ghost riders in the sky" song (not the Johnny Cash version, but the previous one that he covered).Hamilton Slade was your basic Lone Ranger pastiche, but with a more ghostly motif. It didn't really find a market, despite the creators loving it, so it didn't last all that long at Atlas. Later, when Atlas became Marvel, it was revived once or twice in the 1960s, and the character has persisted to modern times, although renamed Night Rider to avoid confusion with the 1970s Johnny Blaze version and its sequels.
