| i commute a total of 20 miles a day 5-6 days a week. this is city riding and my foot will be leaving the pedal alot at stop lights. i plan on riding longer distances in the future. i am having a bit of trouble finding road specific shoes in my price range and size. i have a wide foot. i have found the sidi megas and they do fit but im just getting into the sport and im not ready to drop 150 on shoes. i have found some pearls that fit and are a steal but they are mtb. i just have to get out of these clips before they kill me.

| MTB shoes work fine. I use them for everything except racing. This includes commuting, fast-paced training, long epic rides, around town etc. It's great because you can walk in them. They tend to be a bit heavier, and maybe just slightly less efficient, but don't sweat it.

| For your purposes MTB shoes would suit you far better, as they usually have a recessed cleat so you can walk on them.Use tried and trusted Shimano M520 Pedals.

| I ride long rides and love my mountain type shoes that are really more like hiking sneakers with recessed SPD cleats. As me and some of my cycling buds say "once you go SPD, you won't go back". I can walk like a normal person in my shoes, but I have the stiffness and the ability to clip in to my pedals. I can unclip easily when I need to and I can really pull hard up the hills, too. You'll love clippin' in! And remember, just like your momma said, those folks who will pick on you are just jealous! Wear the shoes that work for you!

| I've been riding with bike shoes (and the cleated pedals) on both my mountain bike and road bike for nearly 20 years. Both use an eggbeater-style pedal. My personal favorite (current) shoe is the Sidi Rama and/or Bullet ... both of which are mountain bike shoes. I ride the same shoe (actually, I own two pairs ... one for roading and one for off-roading due to the water/mud factor) on both bike types. And I've managed a respectable 18-20 miles each way (every day, county roads) for at least the last fifteen years. My wife likes the single cleat/single shoe approach as well ... she uses the women's version of the same Sidi mountain bike shoe, but prefers SPD style pedals on both her bikes.
