Strike hard with the stick approximately the width of the sticks point below dead center on the cue ball as it faces you. This cause the ball to move forward due to the strike but with a backwards rotation due to the point of the strike. It should roll back after striking another ball.Hope that helps

the backspin comes from hitting "down on the ball" and not "scooping it" off the ground.
