i have so many white girlfriends and my school is predominantly white..it seems like 60-70 percent of the white girls i know personally go tanning on a regular basis. one of my friends n i were talking about it in class and she said "omg i need to go tanning, i havent been in two days"...and i was like what the f.uck? - youre a skin cancer disaster waiting to happen. seriously though - IM BLACK AND SHE IS PRETTY MUCH AS DARK AS I AM. not to mention that lighter skin ages quicker partly because its more vulnerable to visible sun damage (uva rays) than darker skin....i dont get it....why dont they just go get a spray on tan. i convinced my bf (hes obsessed w/ being tan) to get a professional spray on and it turned out great but it was really expensive. they have lotion that gradually tans as well..and pale skin is just as beautiful as dark skin...i dont get it - are you TRYING to die? or do you just want even more wrinkles when youre 40? its a mystery...i dunno. whatever.

Younger teens and people into their early twenties are doing this because its what they see all the beautiful people doing. It's Shallowness and Self-love. You see it all the time on T.V., Celebrities in the news, and almost all of them have amazing bronzed skin no matter where they are or what time of year it is. People see it and they want to be it. I have a buddy who goes to the local tanning salon once week cause he thinks the ladies wouldn't be attracted to him as much if he wasn't as tanned. No one at the younger age thinks about the repercussions and they don't really care which is the unfortunate part of it all because they're so focused on how they look and how people perceive them. But one day they might wake up and realize that they've been doing it all for the wrong reasons and if they really want to be someone they should start by not being someone else.

My 18 year old goes to the tanning places all the time. I call it a 'fake bake,' but she thinks it's the best. I told her that she will SOOOO regret it and the way she's going it may hit her in her late 20's. She'll also go out onto the river and come home burned, complain it hurts, and the next day she's going to a tanning booth again. I don't understand it. I've told her how unhealthy it is, the risks of cancer, etc. but of course 'MOM' just doesn't understand the 'importance' of being tan. I think the fake and bake machines are even worse than the real sun, myself, plus who knows how clean they really are when you're in them.....I would NEVER do that. I'm 43, so I'm showing some wrinkles, but they're wrinkles of Father Time and NOT of Mother Nature and the Fake and Bake Machines!!! I wear my wrinkles proudly!!! :-)
