| Mr. as you well said, is an abbreviation of Mister that is seldom to never used in its full form. The word itself comes from England and France. Master is a rank below a Gentleman (Knight), usually 'free masters' of some trade guild. It was used also as a way for the servants to address their employer (Yes, Master). When however you encountered a person that was too old to be a Master, it became a Mister. During Elizabethan times Master became commonplace as away to refer to equal peers (My Masters) but this practice soon changed into a way of differentiation of ages. Master in the 19th Century became used for children under 13 you became a Mister when you finished school or got married. (think Alfred addressing Master Wayne) The equivalence in french is Monsieur and the plural is Messrs which in turn is an abbreviation of messieurs (pl. French)
