| Its simple...The correct definition of a vein is, a vessel that carries blood to the heart and for an artery, a vessel that caries blood away from the heart. In the case of fetal circulation, de-oxygenated blood is pumped from the fetal heart to the placenta (via an artery) where the blood is oxygenated and then carried back to the fetus (via a vein). The same is the case for pulmonary (lung) circulation, de-oxygenated blood is pumped from the heart, into an artery, oxygenated at the lungs and then the oxygenated blood is carried back to the heart via a vein.Make sense? Good Luck!

| The best thing to always remember is that Arteries take blood Away from the heart and Veins always return blood to the heart - Arteries Away - Veins Return. The type of vessel does not always indicate the level of oxygenation in the blood. The deoxygenated blood is flowing AWAY from the baby's heart to the placenta where, among other things, gases exchange like the lung. The oxygenated blood RETURNS to the baby's heart in the vein. This situation is the same basic concept in a person's heart-lungs-heart structure. The blood in the arteries and veins is reversed versus the rest of the body. All the best!
