Fall/Spring lake turnover?

Can anyone explain why in the middle of winter in cold climates, the warmest place in a lake is at the bottom? I know it has something to do with the fall/spring turnover but the articles I've read are so confusing in the way they explain it. Can anyone explain it simpler? Thanks
