| My partner and I want to give an old fashioned name to our baby son (due in November!) We also want a name that is uncommon. (We don't want names such as Oscar, Archie or Charlie, etc... because, although they are indeed beautiful, we feel they have become too popular.)We like 'Ernest' very much but are slightly worried by the comedy side to it. Are we being paranoid or should we worry? What do you think?

| Yes please worry about calling your child Ernest. It definitely has comic connotations re " The Importance of being Ernest" by Oscar Wilde and also an "earnest" person doesn't exactly sound like someone who gets much fun in life! Why be old fashioned in naming someone when there are lots of good, unusual names out there that are recognisable but not too wacky, like ....eh...like.....mmmmmm, I see what you mean!

| It depends on the surname, so it requires careful thought. If its Carter - Orson (after Orson Wells) will not be appropriate, if you see what I mean. Ernest sounds fine. Good luck on your final choice.

| It always reminds me of Oscar Wilde's play 'The Importance of being Ernest', but that's not necessarily a bad thing! It was a great play on the pun of the name and I don't think it will have any effect on ur child! I think it's sweet - good luck!

| I like Mitchell. It is not hugely popular and it was more common back in the 1920s

| I will be totally honest there is nothing wrong with the namer ernest, fredrick, alfie, bert or anything being different to others is what makes us all different or we'd all have the same names i called my little girl ellie jessie maria as jessie and maria are names of gradmas and great grandmas ellie was a name at the time which wasnt popular but now theres loads of them so i named my little boy Juno Valentino (as we're italian) then he got grandpas names after them but we dont really use them some people love it some think its odd so go with your heart and when he's born you'll know instantly if he's a little ernest!! good luck with the new little man anyhow (not that you'll need it) xxxxx

| My son has an unusual Eskimo name and we thought to heck with it. He may have the micky taken out of him but his name is full of heritage and we will bring him up to be proud of it.I think ERNEST is a brilliant name and people who are that ignorant and rude to think it funny aren't worth worrying about.
