How would you explain a womans period to a 5 1/2 year old girl?

Take it down to her level. Just tell her that a woman gets a period so many days every month. Its natural. She doesn't need to know to much detail about sex and so forth. but just let her know it natural and all women go through it and its perfectly normal

I'm not sure on your "why I need to explain", is she asking questions?...... My DD hasn't asked to many questions, but I have endometriosis so every month is a nightmare with cramps and she knows something is wrong.So I just tell her "mommy has her cramps" and that is my explanation for the whole thing right now, lol!

Unless she asks questions, I'd wait till she's a couple year's older to explain. But answer the questions honestly and on her terms. It's what happens to a grown up woman for a few days each month and it's not scary. It's what a grown woman's body does when she doesn't have a baby inside.

She needs to know and she needs to be prepaired !!! I babysit for a women who's 8 year old started her period. so 5 and a half is not too young!!stick to the facts... simply...every month you will have a period, you will need to wear pad's( no tampons!)it will last 3-6 daysit's normal all women have themit's a part of growing upwomen have to have periods to be able to get pregnantBUT PLEASE EXPLAIN ALTHOUGH HER BODY IS ABLE TO BECOME PREGNANT IT"S NOT A GOOD IDEA TO BECOME SEXUALLY ACTIVE UNTIL SHE IS OLDER....MUCH OLDER!!!answer any questions she may have.as they come up.

That all depends on why she wants to know. My 6 year old sister walked in on me as a teenager, and saw blood. She freaked out, and thought I was dying, but I just explained to her that this happens to every woman when she grows up, it is only a very little bit of blood that does not hurt, and it lets women know that there bodies can have babies. It satisfied her, although it did make her a little afraid of growing up.I wouldn't bother explaining anything to her now, unless she has seen something that needs explaining. If she hasn't seen anything, there is no reason to tell her. It will most likely just scare her. I would wait until she is at least 8
