Tema: How many centimeters dilated before you have to go to hospital?

I am 2cm, 80% effaced. I was wondering, at what point at your Dr.'s visit (if not before your contractions start), will your Dr. make you go to the hospital?
For example, if I go to my next appointment and I am 3 cm, will I be sent to the hospital or sent home if I am not having steady contractions? If I am sent home, then how many centimeters before they make me go no matter what? I am only 35 weeks 3 days.

Girl I have just turned 2 cm. I was actually 1 cm for 2 weeks. Im due on the 24th and the doc told me that if Im not flowing faster by my next app which is Monday than they will induce my labor. Most doctors prefer you to be 37 weeks so that the baby is full developed. I heard stories that some women dialate early and stay like that for a month or less. It really depends on how your body and baby is progressing. I think if you hit 4 cm thats when they keep u but they also want contractions so make sure that your water breaks.

I'm useless on this one. I didn't even GET to the hospital until I was at an 8. Usually, you don't HAVE to go unless you are heavy in labor-regardless of how dilated you are. At least, that's what my OBGYN told me.

For myself I was 1 cm and had no contraction and just 3 days before my due date and I went to the hospital on my own will.

Once I got to the hospital I waited a couple of hours before they induced me and it took 8 hours before I can give birth to my baby. So it really depend on every situation.

From personal experience, I went into preterm labor at 35 weeks and was 3cm and 60% effaced, they were able to stop the contractions with some medication, but from 35 weeks to the day I delivered (39 weeks) I went to the hospital 3 times, all being sent home. I was even sent home 2 days before I had my baby and I was 6 cm and 100% effaced. (UC Davis Labor and Delivery). It was weird because the nurses were already ready to admit me, they had my IV in and having me sign the admission paperwork. Then the doctor came in and said because I wasn't having contractions 3-5 minutes apart she "didn't feel comfortable" admitting me especially since it was my first. She wanted the contractions to come by themselves. The nurses was telling me that they never send people home in my situation....they were also stunned. I got very upset that they sending me home because I was SO ready to have my baby. after all it was 1am and i delivered less than 48 hours later.

In your case, I encourage you to try to keep your baby in you as long as you can, as least until about 37 weeks. You want to make sure your babies lungs are mature and most of all you want to make sure your baby is able to stay in your room and not have to get admitted to NICU. Your not term yet so you may want to talk to your doctor as far as if you do have your baby within the next week, what are the options and what about your babies health.

It's not so much about how much you're dilated as whether or not you are laboring.

Usually when you hit the 4cm mark you will begin actively laboring - but not always. Sometimes women will dilate to 5 or 6 and labor hasn't started.

Bottom line is, if you're not laboring, or if your water has not yet broken, there is no reason to go to the hospital.
