How to Talk to a Shy Person
This will tell you how to talk to a shy person. Steps - Ask them questions. Ask what their favorite things to do are. Ask what they think about different things that come up in the conversation. Try to avoid yes/no questions. Instead of "Did you like the new movie?" ask "What did you think of ..."
- Be patient. It may take some time to get the full answer, so don't be afraid of a little silence.
- Ask them if they are busy on the weekend and if they want to come over. It may be that the shy person prefers doing things to talking about them.
- Make them feel comfortable with you so they will trust you. This means that you should be careful with making jokes at the expense of shy people, unless you are sure they will enjoy it.
- Look for topics that seem to engage your friend. You would be surprised at how much 'shy' people can blabber once you get them onto a topic they care about.
- Do not ask them why they're shy. It will probably make them uncomfortable and therefore make them seem more shy. Instead, slip into conversation how much you like talking to them and that it would be nice if they spoke more in classes.
- When it's time for them to head home be sweet and say "You were so cool" and "I wish everyone knew how cool you really are; if they did I am sure they'd want to be your friend!"
- Bring them a gift of something they like once you get to know them. Perhaps it'll open the person up.
Tips - Be confident.
- Don't be the shy one, ask questions.
- Maybe you could go to the library after school with your shy friend. It's a good way to get to know each other better.
- If you are beautiful, cute or sexy, they might take it as being more then just friendly conversation. Make sure you don't give this impression. You don't have much to worry about for this, though- most shy people aren't going to try to start a romantic relationship with you.
- However, some shy people may think that you are trying to make fun of them. Try to be genuinely nice, and they'll usually be the same way back.
- Speak in a soft or well - modualted voice.
- Try to stick to subjects having to do with where you are then- for example, when at school, it's easier to talk about school. If they are very shy, avoid asking questions about their personal life, and stick to general things when it comes to likes/dislikes.
Warnings - Don't bother the person too much in public, as it can cause a lot of embarassment for them.
- Don't ask about their shyness; it will most likely embarass them.
- Don't talk too much. Shy people, too, have intelligent things to say, but they require some time and encouragement to open up and share their own opinions. If you blabber on, you will not learn much about the other person, and may bore them. It might take some time before they come out of their shell. Don't think that shy people are boring people- they are not. They are just scared of sharing their own opinions, that's all! Usually shy people are the funniest, coolest people once they open up!
- Remember, just because someone rarely talks doesn't mean they're stuck-up. A lot of them simply want to avoid embarassment, or hurting other people's feelings.
