any length of time in your life? how did you cope? did it make you depressed?

Several times actually. Early in life I was young and punk rock so... just seemed to be the way of things then. Recently however my wife and I ended up in a dump although we didnt no it when we signed the lease. I would not say it made me depressed as much as angry. I coped by focusing on getting a good place to live, which we did.

Sure, for 8 1/2 years straight. I had a beautiful condominium, money, cars, etc. until I became disabled and lost my career and ability to be independent and self-supporting. At first it was terrible and I felt angry and scared because I couldn't even communicate with the other residents--it was like I came from another country. But I realized that bad stuff happens to everyone, I was like everyone else who had a tough break and had to survive. So I eased up and got to know a lot more about real life and other people than I ever would have if I'd stayed rich in my pretty condo never knowing how to fend for myself and make it back on my own. Took a long time to save a tiny bit of money while paying gouging rent to slumlords and being hungry, but hey, I'm OK, and sitting here in my own home--all paid for, in cash--answering your question on my own PC is my just reward and I'm a better person for all of it. Besides, depression does only one thing: robs you of your motivation and abilities to take care of yourself, so when the chips are down, there's no place for depression if you want to cope and move on.
