Kryesore link between hypothyroidism and diabetes?

i was diagnosed with hypothyroidism about a year ago. i went for a check up a few months ago and my doctor mentioned something about diabetes - but i have a really bad memory so can't remember what he said, lol. for a few weeks or so, i have been feeling really thirsty and unable to quench it, i have also been leaking small amounts of urine in my underwear, throughout the day, not a full flow but rather a dribble, enough to make a small wet patch in my underwear (sorry if this is sounding a little disgusting but its the only way i can describe it).is there a link between hypothyroidism and diabetes? should i go to my gp or is it something else?

I have an overactive thyroid due to graves disease. From what I've read from books and the internet I understand that graves disease is an autoimmune disease so basically its my immune system thats attacking my thyroid which is causing the thyroid to over produce. I've read that since I have one autoimmune disease I am at risk of having another one e.g. diabetes. Not sure if its the same for hypothyroidism. Hope this helps and good luck xx

Yes they are closely related, many with one autoimmune disorder will go on the develop another. Lose 5 to 7percent of body weight, exercise, low carbs no sugary drinks and eat smaller portions if you are pre-diabetic, you can stop it.

There is a link between diabetes and thyroid disease. This is more common in women who have type 1 diabetes. I'm a type 1 diabetic and I will be tested for thyroid disease this morning. I've had diabetes for years. Lately, I have noticed symptoms of thyroid disease (thyroid enlargement, weight gain, dry skin, cracked and brittle nails, fatigue). My doctor noticed the enlarged thyroid gland on my last visit 2 weeks ago. My doctor has ordered a wide range of blood tests that will be done today. From what I understand, it's more common for a diabetic to develop thyroid disease than the other way around. The theory behind this is that if a person has one autoimmune disorder, it makes it more likely to develop another. I'm not really too concerned that I might have thyroid disease as I know it can easily be treated. What is upsetting that it feels like my body is betraying me. Hmmmm....If you think you might be developing diabetes, you need to see your doctor for testing. An oral glucose tolerance test is the most accurate way to test for diabetes and it must be done in a doctor's office because it requires strict monitoring. It takes anywhere from 2-5 hours, possibly longer. Good luck and take care.EMT
