Why are the events in Kosovo Province in Serbia important today?

THe Albanians which take up 92 percent of Kosovo want Kosovo to become an independent country. The capitol of Serbia which is Belgrade says that Kosovo can have Autonomy but shouldnt be an independent country. There is UN intervention today.
