| Is there some sort of compass we all have inside of us that guides us through life letting us know what we should and shouldnt do? A spiritual force? And I dont mean God or religion so all the bible bashers out there take it easy and sit this one out. Sometimes I get this feeling that m really suited to somethings and other times I'll get a feeling that im not suited to some other thing. Where does this come from? Thanks

| have you ever heard the song " the riddle" by five for fighting. the lyrics goheres a riddle for youfind the answertheres a reason for the worldyou and Ithat set of lyrics puzzled me. what did the songwriter mean? and then one day it struck me...that the "reason for the world."was based on the relationships we have with other people. the reason for the world...to me is being able to have meaningful interactions with other people around us. To find people we love, to understand one another. Thats how an atheist can die in peace, knowing he has loved people and touched other people's lives. I know this explaination may be cryptic, but thats how i feel. and also...the quote from starwars "may the force be with you"...it means may you always have the connection with other people that are important to you. Again cryptic...but think about it.

| You do not want to bring God into this but it is a desire to find out where did we come from and man ever since we first had the first thought was where do I fit into this world. Every one asks this question every day he is alive and one must find this out for ones self whether it is through God or thinking we came from a space ship or from an ape. Only you can find this out for your self but not by limiting things from entering your thought process. Ask and you will hear but more will come from each time you ask. Seek and you shall find. Close the door and you will go no where. Confucius said " a journey of a 1000 miles begins with the first step".

| i gather that this is a question regarding morality. there are two dominant worldviews with respect to this human concept of right and wrong.these are the theistic and atheistic positions. since you begged off to hear the theistic arguments i'll just share with you what i know about the other view- the atheistic. there are a number of versions of this but i think the one that really is worth contemplating on, is the argument that morality is the product of evolving human consciousness with respect to his surroundings and experience. example, our ancestral prehistoric females learned that less violent males make for better partners and fathers to their young. more agressive males were marked as more likely to commit rape, dominate the females, and hinder the development of the young ones. hence, this selection process passed on less violent genes to their predecessors-us and thus giving us the "morality" to disdain violence, rape, and anything bloody. but the agressive gene hasnt been totally eliminated. that's why we still have some of the ills and mistakes of the primitive angry caveman. that's the force that drives a man in doing good or bad as far as these atheists are concerned.

| To get a good view of the scientific perspective of the kind of thing you're talking about, we need to consider your brain. While some people like to compare the brain to a computer, there is at least one major way in which it is completely different. As most of us have probably noticed at one time or another, at any given moment a computer can only be carrying out ONE task. It might switch between many tasks quickly and SEEM to do many at once, but if you run across something big that chews up a lot of processing power, you will quickly discover that until your computer is done everything else is pretty much at a standstill. This is NOT the way your brain works. Your brain has millions of neurons and they can ALL work more or less independantly. Though your conscious mind may only be thinking about one thing at a time (like a computer), all the other parts of your brain are humming along and doing their own things AT THE SAME TIME. Your senses still collect and process information, your memory is constantly bringing up correlations, and your body is still kept functioning - and many other things are going on - whether you pay attention or not. This can create interesting situations. Because non-conscious parts of your brain are still 'thinking' in a way that is outside your awareness, you can actually know things that you don't KNOW that you know. Most of us are familiar with this in a variety of ways. Like when you stop thinking about a difficult problem and the answer just 'comes' to you - you WERE still thinking about it... just not consciously. Or when you get a 'feeling' about a person or a situation that turns out later to be true - you may have collected very subtle sensory and memory information to create that impression.Just be careful not to give these other parts of your brain too much credit. Though they may often notice things you otherwise do not, they are not really any more accurate than your concious mind. And sometimes much LESS accurate. This is often the source of an irrational fear that psychologists call a phobia - your unconscious mind has associated a harmless thing with a bad or dangerous thing and makes you feel fear where there is no good reason. It is the nature of the human mind to notice the unusual. So even if you perceive that these impressions are almost always correct, it may just be that you are noticing a statistical anomaly. One way to prove it to yourself is to write down EVERY impression you get, and check back later to see which ones are right and which ones are wrong. I have little doubt that you'll find your unconscious isn't much more accurate than your conscious is!Hope that helps!
