| Your body is constantly trying to maintain a balance of fluids and electrolytes needed for optimal cell function. If you eat too much salt, then the hypothalamus (a gland in your brain) senses this, and tells you that you need more fluids, so that you can get rid of some of the salt via the kidneys (urine). Salt is actually present in extracellular fluid (plasma) and helps the cells take on necessary nutrients through a balance of electrolytes such a s sodium and potassium. If you have ever gotten a charlie horse type cramp in your calf muscle (usually while sleeping) it is most likely a potassium defiency, which means that you either need to eat more potassium rich foods. These cramps happen because too much salt messes up the channels in your cells that allow for energy to be made, which potentiates nerve impulses and muscle function. Bottom line- Thirst is your body trying to maintain a constant healthy level of electrolytes to ensure proper cell and muscle function.
