| I recently was going to cook some chicken breasts and I took them out of the package and began to season. The person I was with freaked out and said she couldn't believe I didn't wash my meat before I cooked it. I guess I assumed cooking killed any bacteria...? am I gross?

| the bacteria will die when you cook it. unless it can substain that high of temperature but then it wouldn't be able to harm you anyways. you're fine.

| No, it wont affect the bacteria/safety of the chicken, my grandma always told me to rinse it so the season sticks on it better. You should also pat dry withh a paper towel. Almost all recipes for chicken calls for you to rinse it and pat dry it.

| Absolutely! Use comet, dish soap, some pine-sol mixed together. Scrub well with Brillo. What?!?! Come on, your friend's being strange. If it's at the point you need to wash it, you should probably toss it away!Maybe she's mixed up about when you clean out the cavity of a chicken or turkey, you rinse it out before you put the stuffing in (or I do).

| Some people suggest washing the meat, but realistically you are right cooking should destroy any danger to your health. It really depends on presentation. For instance if I were going to be cooking something with blood still present on it I would rinse it off so that people would be more comfortable eating it. Don't expect it to be clean in any sense other then cosmetically.

| Well seriously just how much bacteria do people think a rinse in COLD water is gonna kill?! I do rinse out the cavity of a whole chicken or turkey but only because I dont want that extra blood that is pooled in there to cook up on the outside of my stuffing.

| There are some cultures that wash meat prior to cooking it. We always soak chicken / turkey in vinegar or lemon juice and kosher salt. This releases all of the gook on it. remember meat is handled by quite a few people on route to the markets. For red meats, we simply wash it with a little vinegar and baking soda, It must be rinsed very well afterwards. Try it and see what comes off of the meat before you actually cook it.
