Ok, I'm trying for the non-expensive while including luau type foods. These are all very simple ideas also. Additionally, the atmosphere you create will be important. Colorful serving dishes and table cloths will help. My daughter and I have bought cheap colorful serving ware over the last few years at discount stores such as Dollar General and Wal-mart. We use it for BBQ's, picnics, and birthdays. You can also get plastic table cloths in colors there for $1 most of the time.Good luck and have fun. Punch--1 gallon of favorite kool-aid mixed with 2 liters of 7 up or the store brand equivilent. It is good this way, but, if you can afford pineapple juice you may add 1 large can for more flavor. Either serve in pitchers or in a punch bowl. BBQ'ed items--1 small bottle of store brand BBQ sauce and add 2 lb. of weiners cut into bite size pieces. Heat in a slow cooker or bake in the oven for 15-20 mins. on 350.degrees. If your budget allows you could have the small sausages in this instead.BBQ or bake chicken thighs and legs. Add BBQ sauce to taste. Roasted Corn--Brush corn on the cob with butter, salt and pepper. Roast in the oven or on the BBQ GrillSweet Potatoes--These can just be baked, then cut in half and topped with a little butter and brown sugar. Seasoned Rice--Cook rice with chicken broth instead of water or add chicken boullion to the water. Add a little chopped onion and frozen peas/carrots. Fruit--Use this as a centerpiece also. Cut the top from a watermelon then hollow out to make a fruit basket. Cut the watermelon in chunks and add whatever fruit is on sale at the market. Any of the following--grapes, cantelope, strawberries. If water melon is too expensive, just do a fruit bowl. You can even add some canned pineapple if you need to. Tropical Sheet Cake--Prepare a regular cake mix and bake in a sheet pan. Top with drained crushed pineapple, sliced banana and whipped topping. Sprinkle a little coconut over the top. Use store brands of course! This is pretty inexpensive, especially if you don't want to pay bakery prices for a decorated theme cake. As long as you have the theme going you can add sandwiches cut into fourths and even some chips or other finger foods. Or if you think they won't eat the above Do hotdogs, fruit, chips and cake. The important thing is to have food that the kids will actually eat!
