I would think the appropriate attire is nice suit for men and tie or even slacks and a sportscoat, a dress for women, but you need not wear a "gown" or formal dress. For women a simple black dress will do and heels. Don't use too much color, the bride will be wearing white and its considered tacky if your dress or suit is too "loud." As we say, you don't want to outshine the bride.I used to be a wedding photographer so the reception should go somethign like this: It will be in a big hall or room, and there will either be a DJ or live band and everyone will have a place to sit at a table. Most times the seats are assigned, but sometimes not. if the tables have numbers on them, exit the hall and look for the seating chart, if not find someone you know or who looks nice and grab a seat. There will be a meal served either buffet style or table service - the bridal party usually has their own table. The Best Man, and Maid of Honor will each stand up and deliver a toast to the new couple. Its blubbery thing and few do it well, but it usually heartfelt and sometimes funny.Bride and Groom will jointly cut the wedding cake, and depending on their persoanlities will either a) gently feed each other a bite, or B) Try to smash the cake into their new spouse's face. The crowd, obviously wants the smash.Bride and Groom will take the dance floor alone for their first song, Bridal party will join in and then typically bride will dance with her dad while groom dances with his mom. Then there is the bouquet toss, where the bride throws her wedding flowers over her shoulder to all the single females in the room - the tradition is that whoever catches the flowers is the next to marry. It can get very rough as all those women jockey for position to catch the flowers. Women are competitive in all things - especially love.Sometimes there is a garter toss, where the groom reaches his hands..or sometimes his head up the brides gown to retrieve a ceremonial garter. He then throws it over his shoulders where the guys who are supposed to catch it, typically run in terror. Just kidding, but they aren't nearly as enthusiastic as the women. There will be lots of dancing: Some classics to look out for: The Electric Slide, The Chicken Dance, The Macarena. There will be lots of drinking typically. Eventually Bride and Groom leave for their honeymoon (post wedding vacation/love fest) sometimes accompanied by a showering of rice or breadcrumbs which symbolize hopes of fertility.Hope this helps
