studying abroad full time -- how did you do it?

hi. i'm a 20 year old from australia working in tokyo and i REALLY want to do a music course somewhere like, US, Canada or UK, probably the usa -- not australia, anyway. has anyone SELF-financed an entire degree overseas? how did you do it? i figure i'll need at least twenty thousand a year, which seems impossibly high, but im willing to believe anything is possible...
