can any one help me with a problem i have with my speakers?

i bougth some speakers from walmart and i plugged them in and they do work right!!! and when i go to set them up in the in sounds and audio device properties i go to the audio tab and then click speaker setting and then click advance and they only work if i select 5.1 sound speaker !!! but when i go to my myspace profile i cant hear my music or when i go to you tube !!! help me please i will really appreciate it if someone could help me
