Short-term disability denied due to preexisting condition!!?

I recently was hired during the first trimester of my pregnancy. I have since found out that I am having twins and due to complications with multiple births, I am now on restrictive bed rest. I applied for short term disability and was denied claiming that this is a preexisting condition (which they do not cover). I plan on appealing the decision and contacting a lawyer, but who knows how long that will take. I am so close to having enough hours to qualify for FLMA, but not yet. Does anyone know where I can go from here to continue receiving some sort of income?! Please help!!

That is true. You cannot qualify for short term disability with any kind of pre-existing condition. I don't think a lawyer would be able to help you. It's just the way it is. It would be the same if you had some type of medical condition too. There are ususally a lot of medical questions on the application and you can be denied for any number of reasons. This has happened to some women that I work with too and they end up just taking a shorter leave, like only 6 weeks instead of the 12 week famiily leave. Good Luck with your twins.
