well it depends on where you live first. in the north east we pay by the hour and in the south i hear you pay by the work. but dont worry so much about how much, but how good the work will be. go to friends or people that you see with good tattoos and ask where they got them done. if you want the artist to draw the whole thing for you, ask them to sketch it out and then tell them what you like and dislike until it is exactlly what you want. the big thing to remember is that this is YOURS forever so its what you want or nothing.

How traditional? Some American takes on the classic Japanese style tend to use more colors & deeper tones, and that takes longer & therefore more costly. This isn't a dis on the style, just a commentary. I've heard that, just like with American style pizza having become popular in Italy, that style change has made it's way back to Japan and is gaining a loyal following there.Expect to pay ~$1k for a half-sleeve, maybe a little less if you do gray/shaded water and clouds or other background art. A shaded/grayscale dragon versus fully colored should also make the work cheaper.I'd also guess ~10 hours of work, so 3-5 sessions at an assumed $100/hour.
