i use black eyeliner and if i really want to make my eyes 'pop' i outline my lower lashes and top lashes with it, but not so it's wicked heavy, (i have hazel eyes) so then i put on light and dark brown eyeshadow and smudge it, curl my top lashes, and coat the top lashes with maybelline very black mascara. but if you want the 'smokey' look, you could try using a lighter pencil and smudging it with a q-tip or your finger, your preference, and putting the grey eyeshadow on and finish with mascara. good luck!
