When your doctor told you that you were anemic, he or she should have suggested an iron pill. There are many different kinds, and you really should take what your doctor prescribes (whether it be Rx or OTC). What you take will depend on how low your levels are. There are also different TYPES of iron supplements, and some are not as effective as others. Please be careful! I am anemic, and during my previous pregnancies my levels were stable. They are severely low this time, and I have to get iron infusions (iron administered via IV, a four hour process twice a week) to ensure the health of my baby girl. When your iron is low, your blood cells are not carrying enough oxygen to your body. It has numerous side effects, and can effect the baby.
