My dad actually read the first two to me when I was like seven and I loved them back then. They are really pretty tame as far as age level is concerned, I think you should let him/her because for a 12 yr old this book has a lot of intelligent thought provoking ideas in it. I think anyone who will laugh at the absurdity of trying to figure out the meaning of life at that age, is going to be very well adjusted individual in the future.
