Here is a list of things a parent can do to help a child in school.1. Have a quiet study area in the home with a desk and chair. Reference books like a dictionary or encyclopedia would be nice. Make this area as attractive as possible with plants and plenty of light. There must not be any distractions like TV or loud music. 2. Have a set time for study. For example when the child returns home from school @ 3:00, let them have a snack and play outside until 4:00. Then, the child comes in and studies for an hour. At first, you may want to start with 1/2 an hour. With younger children, make this study time a team effort. Keep it light and fun. You want this to been seen as a positive for the child, and the child should never see this as a punishment. 3. Have a reward for the child. For example, for everyday the child studies, give him or her a sticker. After so many stickers, (three to four weeks worth) they get a $5.00 bonus added onto their allowance. If they had great report cards all year, have a party! The party could be as simple as a pizza party after school on Friday and a movie with a few of their friends.4. Keep open communication with the child's teacher. Remember the teacher is on your side and wants your child to succeed. Always approach the teacher with this thought in mind. Usually if a teacher is concerned or upset with a child it is because the child is not doing what he or she needs to do to be successful. If you can, email or write the teacher once a month a short note saying hello (send it via mail, not the child). Ask how your child is doing and if there is anything you need to know or can do to help your child succeed. Make sure to include contact information at the end, so the teacher can contact you right away instead of having to look it up. Do this all the way through school, especially in high school.5. Encourage your child to have a nice friendly yet professional relationship with his or her teachers. Teach them to always ask questions when they do not understand.6. Take advantage of any and all tutoring programs the school or your community has to offer. Even if your child is good at a subject, seeing it from another angle is a good thing.7. If your child is having problems get help right away. If there are any grades less than "B" on the first progress report, get help.I hope this list helps!
