Me and my wife went through the same thing. We couldn't find the box with our marriage liscense in it. We just ended up going back to the state office and getting a certified copy. No problem, but it cost $5.
The short of it is, it might be easier just to spend a few bucks and get the stuff replaced.
The passports might hurt, not sure if they can reissue them so easily. The rest will be nickles and dimes.
